Dictionary of Terms:

Z

Z-Score

A statistical measurement that describes a value's relationship to the mean of a group of values; Z-scores can be used in assessments to analyze neurodevelopmental assessments and understand where an individual may fall within typical ranges.

Zealousness

Intense enthusiasm or passion for a particular interest or activity; neurodivergent individuals may display zealousness in areas of special interest, often delving deeply into subjects they are passionate about.

Zen

A state of calmness and mindfulness often achieved through meditation; practices that encourage a Zen mindset can be beneficial for neurodivergent individuals in managing anxiety and improving focus.

Zest

Great enthusiasm and energy; promoting zest in educational or therapeutic settings can help engage neurodivergent individuals and encourage positive learning experiences.

Zoning Out

The experience of losing focus or becoming disconnected from one’s surroundings; many neurodivergent individuals may experience zoning out, which can affect their participation in social settings or educational environments.

Zoom Fatigue

A term used to describe the exhaustion that comes from excessive use of video conferencing technology; neurodivergent individuals may be particularly sensitive to zoom fatigue due to sensory overload or social demands.

Zygomaticus Major

A muscle involved in facial expressions, particularly in smiling; understanding facial expressions and the muscles involved can be important in social interactions for neurodivergent individuals, particularly those with social communication challenges.
