Latest dyslexia research...

ree

In the past 10 years, U.S. states have created more reading laws than ever before... These laws aim to help teachers use proven reading methods and support students who struggle with reading (including dyslexia).

A new special report looks at how these laws are actually working in schools - what's helping, what's getting in the way, and how they're affecting teachers and students

Looking at examples from different states plus nationwide studies, one thing is clear: making a law is just the first step. Real success depends on having the right support systems, enough money and resources, and continuous training for teachers.

Key findings from the research:

  • Reading checks: Work best when teachers get effective training and schools have the right tools, but many schools struggle with technology and finding time

  • Teaching materials: Schools are being more careful about choosing reading programs, but often focus too much on phonics (sounding out words) and not enough on vocabulary and understanding

  • Teacher training: Both new teachers and experienced teachers are getting better training, and how it's set up makes a big difference

  • Student progress: Results are mixed - many students who need help still aren't being identified
