ND Annex: Misophonia

ree

🔊 Ever felt intense anger, anxiety, or discomfort from sounds like chewing, clicking pens, or heavy breathing? You’re not alone—this experience is called misophonia.

Misophonia is a lesser-known neurodivergence where certain noises trigger strong emotional and even physical reactions. This can make everyday life and relationships difficult, as many avoid social situations to escape their sound triggers.

Common triggers include:

  • Chewing & eating sounds

  • Repeated noises (like pen clicking)

  • Breathing or mouth sounds

While the cause isn’t fully understood, misophonia seems linked to how the brain processes sound, can run with anxiety or OCD, and is not yet classified as a formal disorder—but its impact is real.

Coping tips:

  • Use white noise or calming sounds as a buffer

  • Practice mindfulness for stress reduction

  • Try cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or exposure therapy

  • Connect with support groups for shared strategies and empathy

Raising awareness and seeking help can make a big difference. Let’s foster understanding and support for those with misophonia.
